WHO TO CALL INSTEAD OF THE POLICE…
We are taught to believe that we need to call the police during a community crisis.
Calling the police is not necessary when it comes to resolving community issues. In fact, they may escalate the issue they’re called about, or create new issues: a 2016 study showed an estimated 1 in 5 victims of lethal force by police were due to calls of concern or about the victim’s “disruptive behavior” – behaviors that were due to mental illness.
Relying on professionals who specialize in the services we need creates a safer community for us all, which is why we need to reconsider what institutions need more funding.
845 Unity compiled lists of resources for residents in the Mid Hudson Valley region that are more prepared to deal with community crisis and troubles than the police.
